The Earth turns 'round and life goes on. On and On
(ad infinitum)

I tend to read more non-fiction than fiction, and more science and history than, say, works on art and literature.

"On and On" was written after digesting another of those books on cosmology that I especially enjoy reading. (Cosmology, not cosmetology.)

Whether the universe is "oscillating," so that The Big Bang is followed by The Big Crunch to be followed by another Big Bang to be followed by another..., or the universe is "ever-expanding," so that eventually entropy rules and matter itself decays into a nebulous nothingness, the world we know will end someday.

Bummer.

I thought about the continuity of lineage for all things Present. Time and space, planets and stars, life and love, thoughts and dreams, you and I,... for everything that exists today, no matter how convoluted and seemingly disparate the genealogical branches, all lineage traces back to one common ancestral spark of Being. (Q: If there's no one around to hear it when a singularity winks into existence and a Big Bang occurs, does it make a sound?)

Present is Past. But Present is not necessarily Future. (Yeah, yeah, I know. But I'm not completely full of it. Am I? Just hear me out, okay?)

Death and destruction, entropy and extinction... shit happens, man. And, yeah, that crap on your windshield may have been deposited there by some highly-evolved, direct descendent of one breed of dinosaur. But most models of those giant reptiles have no heirs living among us today. We humans are here for now. But the production lines for other models of apes have long been discontinued and none are among old warehouse stock. Whole galaxies of stars and planets and life and all have collapsed and died and disappeared. RIP.

All Present is connected through the Past to the Beginning. Continuity. But, except on a molecular, atomic, or sub-atomic level, All Present has no guarantees for a continuous role in the Future.

And blah, blah, blah.

Anyway,... after pondering all that ponderous stuff, my considered conclusion was this: "Well, there's no use in worrying about it now."

When my friend Deanna Kay first heard this song, her impression was that I had turned from a more familiar point of view to explore a sort of spiritual mysticism. I wondered. And did she think of that as a potentially-enlightening approach? Or did she find it irrational and self-deluding? Some people have very strong opinions regarding mysticism. They're either fer it or again' it. I thought of asking Deanna to explain. But by then it seemed the appropriate moment for inquiry had passed, so I thought to myself, "Well, there's no use in worrying about it now."

On and On
(ad infinitum)
Words and Music by David R. Lister

The Earth turns 'round, the sun goes down
The stars flit 'round like fireflies
A crescent moon is on the rise
Just like a Cheshire smile
And all the while, the time ticks on
And soon the smile and the night have gone
Another new day breaks at dawn
The Earth turns on

Up from the dust, the good seed thrusts
Its shoot to the light in the blue-water skies
To form its fruit before it dies
And returns to dust
Just as it must, the time ticks on
And soon the moon and the night have gone
Another new day breaks at dawn
And life goes on

On and on
Each passing season just leads to a new one
But the vine is a tried and a true one
And it keeps growing on and on

On and on
Don't worry whether it will last forever
Right now the Earth turns 'round
And life goes on

Within the myth, the word survives
And from the word all dreams derive
To light the night of dreamless sleep
And keep love alive
It only seems that time ticks on
But soon the dreams and the night have gone
Another new day breaks at dawn
The word lives on

On and on
Each fading dream gives way to a new one
But the word is a tried and a true one
And it keeps singing on and on

On and on
Don't worry whether it will last forever
Right now the Earth turns 'round
And life goes on

The Earth turns 'round and life goes on
