Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy Slapstick Situation Blues

One Saturday afternoon while watching a collection of "Laurel and Hardy" shorts on AMC, I began to recognize similarities between my marriage and the relationship Stan and Ollie shared on screen. Whoa!

And what's more unnerving is that I realized my wife was straight man Oliver while I was fallguy Stanley. Jeez!

Well, yeah, Stan's my favorite, too. But he sure tended to get pushed and smacked around a lot. I could identify.

"Slapstick Situation Blues" is bouncy broad action. (In my mind, even the Keystone Kops make a cameo appearance in the third verse.)

My goal was a short, lively, monochromatic visualization in broad strokes. But I hope it doesn't seem that I've rendered my characters in black and white only.

Read the lyrics below, check out the Lead Sheet for the words and music, or listen to a homemade MP3 song demo recording. BD

Thin Line

Slapstick Situation Blues
Words and Music by David R. Lister

You be the straight man
I'll be your fallguy
You play it deadpan
While I pull the punch line
Between comedy and tragedy
We walk that fine line win or lose
With old anticipation
Got the Slapstick Situation Blues

You're so self-restrained and sober
Till I yuk it up
You bring order into chaos, Babe
But then I muck it up
You wear your heart on your sleeve
I wear my baggy pants and floppy old shoes
With old anticipation
Got the Slapstick Situation Blues

When our antics get too frantic
Maybe someone calls the cops
We'll arm ourselves with cream pies
And pull out all the stops
But until we've run one chase scene
Hey, we cannot say we've paid our dues
With old anticipation
Got the Slapstick Situation Blues

(Dada da dada...)

It's our pain that makes 'em laugh, Babe
They laugh until they cry
Through all this slapstick torture
Hey, they know we'll never die
Don't we always come back
For more pain than anyone can sanely use?
With old anticipation
Got the Slapstick Situation Blues

With old anticipation
Got the Slapstick Situation Blues
